Writers’ Dash (6am & 6pm PST) hosted in Second Life® by Doyle Slen, Ginger Jorgental, Harriet Gausman and Roberrt Magne.

The Writers’ Dash (#writersdash or #dailydash on Twitter) is a 15-minute free writing exercise held on Twitter, Facebook and Second Life® every weekday. At 5:30am & 5:30pm PST we share the word prompt on our social media channels; the live event begins in Second Life® at 6am & 6pm PST. Write whatever comes to you. Don’t fixate too heavily on what you are writing and disengage your inner editor – the key is for you to get the words on the page first; you can worry about editing later. If you are attending the live event in Second Life® there will be an opportunity for you to show your work to the other participants after the 15 minutes are up. If you are unable to attend the live event you can share your work on our blog. Just look out for the prompt post and leave your dash piece as a comment.

If you want to submit your edited dashes to our monthly Competitive Dash please read our Submissions page for guidelines.

Special Events

March Poetry Festival

An exhibition of work and readings from Second Life®’s most prominent poets. Held the last weekend of March.

Short Story Workshop

This intensive, month-long workshop, devised to toss participants head first into the process of writing a short story (1k – 10/20k words) is held twice a year.

Each week we will tackle a different ingredient so participants learn how to construct a short story, much like baking a cake.

Areas Covered

  • the differences between a short story and novel (and the similarities)
  • the ingredients of a good story
  • beginning hooks
  • characterization
  • plot
  • character/story motivation
  • endings

Participants are encouraged to bring their short fiction ideas but they can also develop them during the first week.

The workshop is free of charge to members of Virtual Writers, Inc.

If you are interested in holding an event at our writers’ sim please submit your query through our online contact form.

About Virtual Writers, Inc.

Virtual Writers, Inc. is a popular online writers’ community committed to showcasing established and emerging writers in a range of interactive and immersive environments. Here we learn to experiment with digital, social and virtual world platforms to push the creative envelope and develop a strong, unique voice.

We provide a wealth of opportunities for writers to meet, share resources, access new markets, attend online writing events, workshops and interactive readings, and discover the best writers’ conferences, competitions, colonies and literary organisations.

Our main online writers’ space is in the form of a digital community where users move, communicate and socialise using mouse, microphone and keyboard controls. We find this type of virtual environment ideal for busy writers as it enables them to attend live events – such as author meet & greets, poetry open mics and book readings – without the need for travel. The writer is able to promote his work, meet with publishers, literary agents and other authors all from the comfort of an armchair.

If you want to become involved in an active writing community then visit us on Second Life® or our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, & Goodreads) and get interactive. To learn more about our services please visit the following pages (Premium Services, Free Author Services) or contact us through our online contact form.

Whether it’s immersing yourself in a writing community and meeting other writers, publicizing a book release, facilitating the marketing of your book online, or simply increasing your presence on the web, Virtual Writers, Inc. can help you.
